Vintage 2017 is not over yet
So far the 2017 Vintage is an absolute gem for the team at Langi. Ideal conditions for a slow ripening, which is key for Mount Langi Ghiran wine to develop complex flavours.
Earlier this vintage, Melbournians suffered from a cold and wet Spring, but for Langi it has been really exciting. After all we are a cool climate wine producer.
Melbourne Food and Wine Festival 2017
This year marks the 25th year of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Food and wine lovers in their hundreds and thousands each year indulge in bespoke events that fill Melbourne’s labyrinthine network of restaurants, laneways, lights-turned-down basements, dizzying rooftops as well as spilling into spectacular regional Victoria.
This year Mount Langi Ghiran is involved in a variety of events over the festival period:
2015 Spinoff Skin Contact Riesling
The Old Riesling block at Mount Langi Ghiran, planted in 1977, has produced some incredible wines over the years; the clever combination of site selection and clonal selection has yielded some glorious Riesling fruit for our indulgent winemakers to play with in the winery.
Spinoff Skin Contact Riesling was inspired by the idea of exploring the texture element to an extreme, whilst also opening up an entirely new spectrum of aroma, flavour and taste through long-term skin contact.
2015 Spinoff Barbera
Italian immigrants, the Fratin Brothers, originally planted the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard in 1963 captivated by the sentimental notion that it reminded them of home. They planted vines, nut trees and fig trees to create their little piece of Veneto here in Australia. Unable to find any Italian wine varieties they instead planted the local Shiraz vine… this Shiraz has since become the famed source of Langi Shiraz.
2015 Spinoff Chardonnay
Chardonnay was planted at Mount Langi Ghiran in 1985 on the most eastern face of the property. This vine material is old, and its origins are largely unknown and somewhat mysterious.
This fruit typically produces Mount Langi Ghiran Blanc de Blancs sparkling; a reflection of its dazzling natural acidity and early flavor development. Now over 30 years old, these chardonnay vines are delivering beautiful fruit with great drive and generosity of flavor, with a tension that keeps building amidst the expanding fruit and subtle “Langi” spice.
Spinoff | A new facet of Mount Langi Ghiran
Introducing Mount Langi Ghiran Spinoff – the result of winemaker’s creativity and desire to create different wines that express the full diversity of the Mount Langi Ghiran’s terroir and beyond.

traditional to ensure this a wine festival with a difference. Mount Langi Ghiran will bring on the island and will be presenting for the first time in Sydney wines from a new limited range Mount Langi Ghiran Spinoff.
The 36th release of Langi Shiraz
On Thursday 1st September, Chief winemaker Ben Haines was introducing the 36th release of the Langi Shiraz – the 2014 Langi Shiraz.
In the 2017 James Halliday Wine Companion, the industry doyen gave the 2014 Langi Shiraz 98 points and described the wine like “an orchestra playing Beethoven”. This unusual comparison is spot on for the guests of the event who had the chance to enjoy the 2014 Langi Shiraz accompanied by a small performance by musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
2014 Langi Shiraz release dinner
Chief Winemaker Ben Haines will first introduce the new release of the iconic Langi Shiraz before a small performance by musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra leading the evening to a 5 courses dinner carefully matched to Mount Langi Ghiran wines.
En Primeur 2014 Mast Shiraz
After a recent tasting, Mount Langi Ghiran winemaking team have decided to release the 2014 Mast Shiraz in January 2017.
With only 177 dozen produced for the 2014 vintage and aware of the high demand for the Mast Shiraz, Mount Langi Ghiran has chosen to allocate this wine with priority to its wine club members and consumers. To guarantee members and consumers priority access, the team will run en primeur sale at cellar door
Spreading a mulch under vines is not a new idea, like any home garden, mulch will improve the soil quality and improve the moisture holding properties of the soil.
All Hail Mother Nature
We don’t see a lot of water out here at Mount Langi Ghiran. The dry, slightly parched feeling is becoming ever so familiar to me, and is now something I strongly associate with premium cool climate winemaking in the best regions of Victoria, such as the Grampians. For my wife, however, who hails from the Gold Coast, living at Mount Langi Ghiran in the Grampians and being solely reliant on rainwater, has been an awakening.
We experienced an awakening in a more literal sense in the early hours of Thursday, 28th of January.
Cliff Edge Shiraz & Cliff Edge Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 releases
New releases are always an exciting time of the year.
It represents the achievement of months of work and sometimes years of wait and patience. Today, we are pleased to introduce you to the 2014 Cliff Edge Shiraz and 2014 Cliff Edge Cabernet Sauvignon.
About a year ago our viticulturist Damien Sheehan and our vineyard team decided to create a nursery at Mount Langi Ghiran. Thus nursery is an endeavour to conserve our precious stocks of old vines, their pedigree traces back over 150years to the swiss settlers that pioneered viticuture in the Grampians.
In October, while the first scions from the Old Block Shiraz and Old Block Cabernet Sauvignon planted last year were commencing their second season, new cuttings were added in the nursery.
End of Vintage 2015
Langi Old Block, the source of the ‘Langi Shiraz’ is a very special site. Planted in 1963, the vines deliver fruit of extreme complexity, deeply evocative aromas and flavours, and stunning fineness. Old Block was picked in 10 different parcels, and each bunch was hand selected – all with the aim of capturing the uniqueness and nuance of each section of the block.
James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2016
The 2012 and 2013 Mast Shiraz were respectively scored 98 points and 97 points by James Halliday. We like to think these exceptional results convey our efforts to fulfill Trevor’s legacy at Langi. We like to think these exceptional results convey our efforts to honour Trevor’s legacy at Langi.
A new friendship
When Isa Bal, Head Sommelier of the Fat Duck Group first came to Mount Langi Ghiran in March this year, a spark was lit. Three months later, the 2012 Langi Shiraz was introduced to the degustation menu Fat Duck Melbourne.
Mast Shiraz scores 98 and 97pts
In 2012 we decided to create Mast Shiraz, our tribute to Trevor Mast, a legend of Australian winemaking and Mount Langi Ghiran’s first winemaker.
Recently the 2 first vintages of this wine, 2012 and 2013, were respectively scored 98points and 97points by the industry doyen James Halliday. We like to think these exceptional results convey our efforts to honour Trevor’s legacy at Langi.
