Langi Shiraz
The Site … Made from fruit from the renowned ‘Old Block’ Shiraz at the Mount Langi Ghiran property which was planted by the Fratin family in 1963, the vines are now over 40 years old.
Soils … Derived from ancient Ordovician red clays rich in ironstone, the soils vary somewhat within the block which is an important contributor to the complexity of the wine. The topsoil comprises granitic sands and silts eroded over many years from the ancient Mount; whilst red clay loams provide excellent drainage. The soil profile enhances our control of the vine’s water requirements allowing the vines to naturally stress at critical periods of growth which further concentrates fruit flavour.
Oak … Some may be forgiven for thinking this is the first vintage to see 100% French Oak. Though it is rare in the wine’s long history it’s not the first and it won’t be the last. In 2003, Trevor Mast and Chief winemaker Dan Buckle spent many hours tasting 100’s of barrels to ascertain future directions for the Mount Langi Ghiran barrel program. They agreed on four particular coopers, whose style most suited the wines – they all happened to be French. Committed to nurturing long term relationships with these coopers, Dan will work closely with them to strive for even greater consistency and uncompromising quality going forward.
