Winemaking Notes
This Pinot Noir is sourced from a single vineyard in Rhymney, 40 minutes’ drive from Mount Langi Ghiran. This Pinot Noir vineyard is planted to a rare and ancient clone. In 1983 when James Brady asked his neighbours at Bests winery if he could take cuttings from their vines little did he know he had his hands on one of the world’s oldest plantings of Pinot Noir. Planted on south facing slopes and with very limited water supply, the vineyard produces low yields of outstanding quality. Grapes are sorted and harvested by hand, with a portion of whole bunches fermented. The technique of pigeage is performed throughout this fermentation, with pigeage simply referring to the motion of gently working the fermentation using your feet.

32yo vines (cuttings from Best’s old vines), matured in used French oak for 10 months. Very light colour; this is pinot to its bootstraps, with a highly fragrant small red fruits bouquet, and a palate that follows on seamlessly, the red fruits also picking up some elements of forest floor to increase the complexity.

Grampians pinot noir from the alt-label of Mount Langi Ghiran. Something different, ey? Have to trawl back through the history, but Mount Langi Ghiran did produce some pretty serious pinot noir, back in the day. Perhaps an homage to those times. Perhaps just something intriguing to do for progressive thinking winemaker Ben Haines. Unsure, but kinda cool seeing these wines emerge. Tangy little pinot this is, refreshment and interest hand-in-hand. Whiffs of smoke, dried herbs, undergrowth, but the mainstay is black cherries and thick-skinned plum fruitiness. The palate is crisp with just ripe black cherry fruit character, shows slender threads of tannin, bites with green herb tanginess to acidity. Leaner style, done well. It feels like it will drink best in a couple of years.
