Growing Conditions
Cold, wet and windy conditions in Spring 2013 led to inconsistent fruit set, and low yields. Temperatures soared in January with several heat spikes pushing well in to the 40’s, before returning to perfectly mild and dry conditions for the remainder of the season. House Block 4 ripened slowly and steadily, and was one of the last to be harvested for 2014.

Tasting Notes

Palate
The 2014 Mast Shiraz reflects season and site in equal measure. Its concentration is carried with elegance and poise, and its grand, complex structure lacks no confidence.

Winemaking Notes
Mast Shiraz was introduced in 2012 to honour the legacy of Trevor Mast - one of the industry’s great pioneers of cool climate wines and the first Winemaker at Mount Langi Ghiran. This, the third release of Mast Shiraz, continues the exploration of the Mount Langi Ghiran Vineyard and showcases one of Trevor’s favourite shiraz blocks known at Langi as “House Block 4”. Typically the coolest block on the property with its steep east face, and Mount Langi Ghiran itself bearing over and casting its shadow, House Block 4 reflects a deep, moody and highly evocative side of the Langi vineyard.

25yo vines, matured in French oak (35% new) for 16 months. Each of the ‘14 Langi Shirazs have its own personality and presence, very different to the others. This is medium to full-bodied, with power and drive to its dark fruits, ripe tannins and oak. It is a mouthwatering wine of great quality and style. Wine for Mozart.

Mast Shiraz has been a positive addition to the Mount Langi Ghiran stable if annual releases. To say the least. This is much lighter than the hulking 2013 release but as we all know, that’s not necessarily a bad thing; indeed the opposite. It’s more of a water colour than an oil painting. It’s succulent, peppery, fine, you’d even call it intricate. Everything about the wine says finesse. The flow of fruit, the weave of fine-grained tannin, the spice, the hint of undergrowth, the juicy length. You can drink this now, but it has a world of maturity to grow into. It’s quite exquisitely well balanced.

Deepish red colour with a bright purple tint. Pepper, spice and red fruit aromas, with stemmy foresty overtones suggesting some whole-bunch ferment, and quite a generous helping of oak. The same flavours come through on the palate where the tannins are firm and a trifle gritty, but the wine is intense, medium to full-bodied and tightly structured. Very appealing, and will age well.

Coming from a vineyard block planted by Trevor Mast in 1986 —“House Block 4”—this label was started in 2012. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Mast Shiraz has a pronounced nose of black currants and underbrush, garrigue, dried herbs, earth, pepper and Bovril. Sichuan pepper and lavender come through on the concentrated palate along with ripe, rounded tannins and a lively backbone.
