In recognition of Trevor Mast’s role in establishing the reputation of Mount Langi Ghiran and as a tribute to the man himself we created the Mast Shiraz. Trevor is revered as a pioneer of cool climate shiraz in Australia. Thanks to his foresight we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Shiraz with many different blocks vying selection Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Trevor planted over 15 different blocks of shiraz; each exploring different aspects of the terrains and microclimates of the Langi estate. His foresight soon bore fruit. Small batches of wine were produced, each expressive of its unique terroir. Mast Shiraz celebrates the Langi vineyard in a unique and spectacular light.
In 2012, for its inaugural release, there were no surprises when one of Trevor’s favourite blocks stood out, the tried and true “House Block 4”. The 2014, the third vintage of Mast Shiraz released on the 12 January 2017, continues the exploration of the Mount Langi Ghiran Vineyard and still showcases Trevor’s favourite shiraz blocks. Typically the coolest block on the property with its steep east face, and Mount Langi Ghiran itself bearing over and casting its shadow, HB4 reflects a deep, moody and highly evocative side of the vineyard.
With a vibrant, glowing core of red, black and blue fruits, and deeply complex, evocative spice, Mast is all power and drive with Langi’s signature silkiness and elegance.
The 2014 Mast Shiraz reflects season and site in equal measure. Its concentration is carried with elegance and poise, and its grand, complex structure lacks no confidence.
The 2 first vintages of this wine, 2012 and 2013, were respectively scored 98 points and 97 points by the industry doyen James Halliday. The 2014 vintage was as well received as the previous vintages. Halliday scored it 97 points, Campbell Mattinson 96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown 92 points for Robert Parker and it won gold medal at the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2016. We like to think these exceptional results convey our efforts to honour Trevor’s legacy at Langi.
With only 177 dozen produced for the 2014 vintage and aware of the high demand for the Mast Shiraz, Mount Langi Ghiran had chosen to allocate this wine with priority to its wine club members and consumers. After having run two different pre-releases, there is only a limited number of wine left to purchase at cellar door.
