[…] From a good cellar and a generous friend. Of course, 1998 is regarded as a very good year for wine from the Grampians. The back label gave it 15 years for optimum drinking…
What an outstanding, mature wine. Seductive pleasure with quilt-like texture, soft, new leather licks in dark plum and black cherry, a ferrous note, white and black pepper dashed through the lot. Secondary characters come as espresso and subtle clove notes, a touch of fig/date in the mix but really this is a wine in great form. Perfume perhaps a little murkier than the sweet fruit in the palate, a smidge of rustic earthiness and gum leaf around pruning-plum notes. Such pleasure here, lush, yet firm edged, long and satisfyingly palate staining. Wonderful to drink; one of those moments that reminds you what happens to great wines in cellars.
