Spinoff Skin Contact Riesling was inspired by the idea of exploring the texture element to an extreme, whilst also opening up an entirely new spectrum of aroma, flavour and taste through long-term skin contact. The 2017 is our second vintage. It has spent 5 months on skins and was bottled unfiltered, unfined.

Tasting Notes

Nose
Through this new interpretation, our Riesling delivers deep old spice characters such as coriander seed, lavender, fennel seed, curry leave and flourishes of clove and bay leaf. There are also moments of rose, orange peel and freshly roasted nuts.
Palate
The palate is an entirely different experience. The spices are pervasive, ducking and weaving throughout a creamy flow of mango, pear and apple, and bringing in characters to the finish that are reminiscent of chicken stock, mushrooms and certain cheeses such as Comté. There is the most pristine and pure acidity throughout this wine. Not linear, or focused; it is fine, but crackles throughout the mouth.
The acidity isn’t the only element tying this wine together; the extended skin contact has created a captivating structure to it. The tannins are super fine, even and wonderfully complex. Not an edge of bitterness, just a mouth-full of character, expression and charm that still speaks of Mount Langi Ghiran, albeit with an entirely different voice.

Winemaking Notes
The Old Riesling block at Mount Langi Ghiran, planted in 1975, has produced some incredible wines over the years; the clever combination of site selection and clonal selection has yielded some glorious Riesling fruit for our indulgent winemakers to play with in the winery.
Grapes were handpicked at the point at which flavor, sugar and acid were in peak balance, and, importantly, skins and seed tannin were soft and yielding rather than hard, bitter and angular. 2018 delivered grapes with extraordinary floral and spice character, most of which rested in the skins and was carried to great length by cracking natural acidity. This prompted the idea of breaking the hand-picked harvest in to four separate ferments, each with varying ratio’s of skins to juice. Drawing on our experience with the 2015 release (which was fermented on 100% of its skins) we were keen to explore the scope of tannin, flavour and acid interactions through observing different proportions of skins to juice in the ferments.
We established four separate ferments: 100% Skin:Juice, 75% Skin:Juice, 50% Skin:Juice, 25% Skin:Juice. After de-stemming to remove the stems, the fruit was gently pressed, and the skins were weighted to achieve the exact skin:juice ratios for each ferment. The resulting excess pure skins that were otherwise redundant, were then fermented as 100% skins with no juice…the ferment that affectionately became known as the “Skin Bin”. Each of these five ferments was sealed and left alone to ferment naturally, covered and teasingly unopened for a period of 6 months before each was then basket pressed separately and aged on lees in old barrels for a further few months. The best combination of each of these parcels was then racked and blended with no filtration and no sulphur dioxide or any other preservative apart from its own natural fermentation carbon dioxide to protect it and keep it fresh. One of the most interesting observations was that the “skin bin” was the most favoured parcel and featured prominently in the final blend…fuel for next year, and a tantalising prospect for the future of Spinoff Skin Contact Riesling from Langi.
There is more to Riesling than sweet and sour, and citrus and floral. Our winemakers have the scope to build texture around the natural high levels of acidity there is in our fruit, using alternative techniques, rather than sugar/sweetness. The idea of exploring and understanding more savoury elements of Riesling is exciting. Through this new interpretation, our Riesling delivers deep old spice characters such as coriander seed, lavender, fennel seed, curry leave and flourishes of clove and bayleaf. There are also moments of rose, orange peel and freshly roasted nuts.
