Langi Shiraz is a revered benchmark for cool climate Australian Shiraz. From the fruit of old vines planted on our isolated vineyard in 1969, this landmark wine reveals the vibrant synergy between site and variety. The secret of what makes Langi Shiraz great lies in the unique character of the vines. The Langi Old Block shiraz vineyard dips and weaves across the landscape, proffering parcels of fruit of extreme complexity and stunning finesse. Each of these parcels is selectively harvested and then fermented separately to capture their inimitable qualities at their peak. Gift box included.

Shiraz (100%)
2022
Grampians, Victoria
A near-perfect growing season transitioned into a cooler period post-veraison, presenting challenges such as reduced sunshine, heightened humidity, and increased bird activity. Despite these conditions, our red varieties achieved full ripeness, with picking extending into early May. The result is a vintage characterised by vibrant berry flavours and an abundance of spice—hallmarks of the 2022 Shiraz.

Tasting Notes

Deep purple with a violet rim.
Complex aromas of blueberries and blackberries, cigar box and a luscious touch of baking spices.
Full-bodied and rich, with generous notes of sarsaparilla root, wood smoke, rosemary and sage enveloping the blue and black fruit profile. Fine, mouthcoating tannins provide structure to this abundant expression of fruit and spice.

The ability to leave picking till early May meant a nice long hang time for the Old Block fruit, this was supported by the decision to destem this vintage. Matured in French barriques of which 60% were new for 18 months. This is a demonstration in finite fruit equality, soils that speak with clarity and reverence and the threading of spice to create a wine of true refinement. This is the exact wine that taught me what terroir depicting Shiraz is all about. Years later it continues to surprise and delight me. Bayberries, morello cherries, boysenberry and blood plums. Terra cotta clay, pink peppercorn and seasonal pine mushrooms. Ripped thyme leaves, cocoa nib and ligurian olives. The sheer length of this wine is remarkable, tasting new flavours for eons. Its thirst quenching and yet the subtle twiggy tannins structure means this will age gradually over decades. If you are picky about vintages you collect, then don’t hesitate with Langi, it is timeless and consistently one of the best quality Shiraz on the planet. A wine moment of the year! This is your dry aged bone in rib eye wine, for God sake don’t mess up the cooking of it.

Dark plummy red in the glass, opaque and inky. Lifted and exotically perfumed aromas of blueberry, Asian spice, sarsaparilla, white pepper, charcuterie, bouquet garni, tamari and dark cherry. Fleshy, juicy, meaty, blue fruited and mouth-filling. There’s real vibrancy and purity of fruit, all working very nicely with nutmeg oak, grippy, textured tannins and perky acidity. This is a super example of cooler climate shiraz.

Off the original 'old block'. Whole-berry ferments, pressed to oak for mlf, aged 18 months in French barriques (60% new). A work of precision, not to mention, beauty. Following on from the stunning '21 vintage comes another top Langi built for ageing but so, so easy to love right now. Delivers a rare elegance, no edges, everything already in place with a show of deep plum and dark fruits, delightfully spicy, gently cedary and earthy, all the while holding an enduring note of black pepper that lasts. Unwavering as fruit, oak and fine tannins work together as one.

This is a beautiful release of Mount Langi’s Langi Shiraz. It’s high on black pepper, fresh through the palate and, simultaneously, substantially well flavoured. Blue, red and black berry flavours lead into red rose, mint and tobacco-like notes, though those peppery characters remain constant throughout. Tannin here is fine and assertive at once, a touch meaty, spicy too, and arranged in a lengthy chain. There’s plenty of juice, spice and assorted savouriness at play here but it finishes dry, in the best of ways. 95+ points
