OUR VITICULTURE AND WINEMAKING SHOWCASE THE CHARACTER OF OUR SITE AND THE NUANCE OF EACH SEASON — SHAPED BY DRAMATIC LANDSCAPES, COOL MOUNTAIN AIR AND ANCIENT GRANITE SOILS.
Terroir
Set between Mount Langi Ghiran and Mount Cole at roughly 350 metres elevation, our estate vineyards benefit from cooling air streams and natural mountain shading. This reduces heat load, shortens effective sunlight hours and extends ripening — building complexity and natural acidity.
Thousands of years of erosion have created granitic sands over red clay loams — a rare combination in Australian viticulture. These soils naturally moderate vine vigour and accentuate the spicy, pepper‑driven character for which our Shiraz is known. Shiraz’s origins in France’s Rhône Valley give it an affinity for granite, making this environment particularly suited to producing exceptional cool‑climate expressions.
Viticulture
Our viticultural philosophy centres on understanding our land intimately — its ancient soils, exposures, microclimates and the nuances of each block. With one of the latest Shiraz harvests in Australia and a Mean January Temperature of approximately 18.5°C — around 2°C cooler than the broader Grampians region — our long ripening season develops fruit with the elegance and complexity for which Langi is renowned.
Key drivers of style:
- Granite sands over red clay loams, moderating vine vigour
- Natural mountain shading reducing afternoon heat load
- Historic, pre-phylloxera Shiraz clonal material
- Interaction of local geomorphology with north–south weather systems: mountain terrain enabling warm inland air streams to mix with cooler south-westerly fronts
Vineyards
Langi Vineyard
Nestled in the valley between Mount Langi Ghiran (922m) and Mount Cole (918m), this vineyard benefits from a predominantly easterly aspect and mountain shading that protects the fruit from the weather extremes and shortens the daylight hours. This results in wines with delicate florals and fruit aromas and alluring spice.
Old Block
The spiritual heart of Langi, planted in 1969 with historic Great Western Shiraz clonal material predating phylloxera in Vitis vinifera. These vines consistently produce fruit with hallmark cool-climate spiced, vibrant berry fruits and exceptional structure — the source of the iconic Langi Shiraz.
Hollows Vineyard
Planted in 1996, our Hollows vineyard sits on a protected northern slope, slightly warmer than our original Langi vineyard and ideal for Rhône varieties. Fruit from this site brings generosity and approachability to our wines, while retaining Langi’s signature spice.
WINEMAKING
Central to our winemaking philosophy is picking our fruit when tannin and texture is at its peak – driven by our intimate understanding not only of our site, but of each individual block. We seek only to elevate the purity of our cool-climate fruit in response to the vagaries of the season.

Winemaking Philosophy
Our approach centres on harvesting fruit when tannin and texture are at their peak — a decision made through deep understanding of each block and its seasonal behaviour. Small‑batch ferments, careful extraction and considered use of French oak help us craft wines of structure and precision. Each vintage is treated individually, with parcels assessed on their own merits. This philosophy ensures every wine reflects its season, its site and our pursuit of continual improvement.
-
Every decision in our vineyards and winery begins with a simple principle: let the character of our site speak clearly in every season.
