HOME TO ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST ICONIC COOL‑CLIMATE WINES — LANGI SHIRAZ.
A site shaped by dramatic landscapes and ancient granite soils.
Nestled against the dramatic granite face of the Great Dividing Range, Mount Langi Ghiran takes its name from the Djab Wurrung term for the “Home of the Yellow‑Tailed Black Cockatoo.” Its rugged beauty, cool‑climate conditions and long ripening season have defined the vineyard’s character for generations.
A family's vision takes root.
The modern chapter of Mount Langi Ghiran began in the late 1960s, when Italian immigrants Don, Lino and Serge Fratin set out to create their own piece of Veneto in the Grampians. In 1969, they planted the vines that would become the legendary Old Block Shiraz — the spiritual heart of the estate and the foundation of Langi Shiraz.
A turning point
After some initial success, the challenging 1980 vintage prompted the Fratins to bring in expert help. Their decision connected them with a young consultant whose influence would shape the future of cool‑climate Shiraz in Australia: Trevor Mast.
The beginning of a winemaking legacy.
Trevor’s talent, conviction and pioneering belief in cool‑climate Shiraz quickly established him as an essential part of Langi’s evolution. By the time Trevor and his wife Sandra purchased the estate with Ian Menzies six years later, his vision for what Mount Langi Ghiran could become was already taking form.
For 15 years, Trevor dedicated himself to elevating Mount Langi Ghiran’s reputation. His tireless work refined the estate’s style, championing intensity, perfume, fine tannin structure and the distinctive pepper spice that would become Langi’s signature, earning global acclaim.
After 15 years of tirelessly building the name of Mount Langi Ghiran, Trevor knew it was time for the brand to go to the next level.
A shared vision finds its home.
In the early 2000s, the Rathbone family began building a portfolio of wineries in premium regions defined by distinctive varietal expression. Their acquisition of Yering Station in the Yarra Valley set the foundation — and in 2002, Mount Langi Ghiran became the next pivotal piece.
Trevor remained as head winemaker until 2004, but continued contributing to the estate until 2006. His international perspective, technical skill and unwavering belief in the site set the foundation for Mount Langi Ghiran. Sadly, Trevor passed away in 2012 following a long battle with early‑onset Alzheimer’s disease. His influence endures — a legacy of precision and cool‑climate mastery that continues to guide our estate today.
Grampians Local Adam Louder Becomes Chief Winemaker.
Adam’s journey with Langi began in 1998 as a young cellar hand under Trevor Mast. After decades of global vintages across Bordeaux, Napa Valley and Margaret River, Adam returned home to the Grampians — drawn back by the site’s unique cool‑climate expression, dramatic landscapes and the opportunity to continue the craft he learned here.
Adam, together with the winemaking team and long‑time Viticulturist and General Manager Damien Sheehan, leads Langi with the same quiet determination instilled by Trevor, continuously striving for excellence.
From the historic Old Block to our boutique small‑batch wines, Mount Langi Ghiran remains dedicated to producing cool‑climate wines of exceptional structure and elegance. Our story continues to evolve, guided by a deep respect for the land and a commitment to progress.
