Winemaking Notes
Due to its very cool climate, Old Block is typically one of the last shiraz vineyards to be harvested in Australia. Long and slow ripening contributes to the development of a stunning range of fruit flavours, perfumes, peppers and spices; Old Block delivers highly complex, elegant shiraz with depth and detail. Cold wet and windy conditions in Spring 2013 led to inconsistent fruit set and low yields. Temperatures soared in January with several heat spikes pushing well in to the 40’s before returning to perfectly mild and dry conditions for the remainder of the season. Fruit was able to develop its full range of flavours and complex phenolic structure. The 2014 Langi Shiraz is a fine, elegant and evocative wine with many layers and dimensions that will further reveal with time.

From the Langi Old Block planted ‘63, matured in French oak (35% new) for 16 months. While full-bodied, this has exceptional poise and elegance, the circus elephant standing on a ball. Intense red, purple and black fruits, ripe tannins and cedary oak are members of an orchestra playing Beethoven.

Deep, youthful red/purple colour, the bouquet intense and full of white pepper and mixed spice aromas. It's full-bodied but elegant as well, with an abundance of fine tannins which coat the palate like lace. It's fruit-sweet in the middle and far from austere. A very fragrant, aromatic cool-climate shiraz of real style and panache. Drink 2016 to 2039

They’ve been producing shiraz from this vineyard for over 35 years now. It’s a fine-grained wine. More about finesse than flounce. Black pepper and black cherry combine with campfire, crushed dry leaves and earthy, undergrowthy characters. Oak is subtle but important, particularly texturally; it adds the polish, the sheen. It’s so fresh at the moment it almost feels/tastes just-fermented. Tannin is both ultra-fine and ultra-firm; at no time though is the flow of flavour interrupted. Floral characters play about the edges. You’d have to say this is a top-notch example of cool climate, mature vine shiraz.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Shiraz Langi offers gorgeous black cherries and blackberry notes on the nose with a floral undercurrent of violets and potpourri, plus a waft of spice box. The medium-bodied palate contributes a lot of freshness with a lively acid backbone and soft tannins structuring the intense fruit, with lingering pepper and herbal hints.

In Langi style, a fragrant, aromatic cool-climate shiraz of class and ganache. White pepper and mixed spice. Elegant-bodied, with racy tannins coating the palate. Sweet fruit in harmony. A superb wine.

2014 is the essence of Langi Shiraz, delivering the signature pepper of this revered site in a beautifully defined blanket of black plum and blackberry fruit. It’s at once powerful and towering and at the same time honed and refined, impeccably structured with super-finely textured tannins and exact, bright acidity. The finish is a revelation; fine, crunchy and so, so long. It will live very long.
