James Brady planted his Pinot Noir vineyard in 1984. When he collected his cuttings from one of the world’s oldest Pinot Noir plantings he was blissfully unaware that he had also collected some Pinot Meunier cuttings. It was more than ten years later when James and our viticulturist Damien Sheehan realised that sprinkled throughout his Pinot Noir vineyard were Pinot Meunier vines, distinctive for their fine, white, downy growth.
In 2017 James harvested the Pinot Meunier separately to see what we could create with this rare variety. The winemaking team decided to go with whole berry fermentation to capture the purest expression of the fruit. Gentle plunging in small open fermenters has produced a wine true to the variety and the terroir.
The Bradach “Pinot” vineyard lies south of the Divide in the rolling Ararat Hills, the 2017 Spinoff Pinot Meunier marks the first vintage of this wine as a single varietal, with only 22 dozen made.
The 2017 Spinoff Pinot Meunier, has a bright, cherry aroma with floral highlights and herbal undertones, it tantalises the palate where the cherry and strawberry fruit are playfully carried along by silky, savoury tannins. It offers a surprising insight into the delights of this rarely seen variety.
