Trevor Mast was a legend of the Australian wine scene. Among his many accomplishments, he is most revered as a pioneer of cool climate Shiraz. The Mast Shiraz is our tribute to his memory, recognising his role in establishing the reputation of Mount Langi Ghiran. Thanks to his foresight, our vineyards showcase the ultimate expression of cool climate Shiraz.

Fruit for this wine is solely hand-picked and sourced exclusively from a single block on our Mount Langi Ghiran Estate Vineyard. This block was planted by Trevor Mast himself some 27 years ago.

2022 was another relatively mild year in terms of temperatures. Yields were back up above average and the quality was brilliant. With ripening drawn out, the fruit gained plenty of spice and a full basket of fruit flavours. Our Mast Shiraz shows great spice, elegant tannins and a firm acid drive.

Ripper release. Put this on your radar. It somehow manages to be spicy, stern and fruitful at once. Length is excellent too. Black cherry, anise, florals, twiggy herbs, woodsmoke and black pepper. Bold and elegant at once. Sinewy and plush. Many things. Many bases. This wine had me in the palm of its hand. 95+

A vintage that kept everyone on their toes, picking occurred in early May, from House Block 4, the coolest of sites. A selection of eight barriques were chosen to be included in the Mast. Matured in 25% new oak for 14 months. There is a purple haze of lilac flowers followed by Acai, bilberry and squeezed pomegranates. Fresh potting soil, soft licorice straps and plum skin. A spice box of ground cumin, gingernut and mace are weaved throughout the fruit. It’s hard not to be impressed but yet another outstanding and beautifully balanced wine. Ripe red apples and rambutans continue to give thanks to the grace of natural acidity. Tannins are powdery and fine making for exquisite drinking now or will continue to give in the cellar for another decade. In honour of Trevor Mast, this is true mastery in a bottle. A wonderful wine to serve with pink lamb cutlets. This is of outrageous value.

Deep, dark, bright red and youthful in the glass. Exotic and lifted aromas of Asian spice, ground pepper, blueberry, anise, dark cherry, bramble and sarsaparilla. Vibrant, bright and evocatively fragrant and blue fruited in flavour. There’s real purity, poise and precision, with a delicious core of briary fruit, nutty oak, an umami edge and sprightly acidity. There’s lovely length, presence and absolute class here.
