INTRODUCING MOUNT LANGI GHIRAN'S VINTAGE 2022 FLAGSHIP RELEASE.

Released annually on September 1st, our Flagships: The Langi Shiraz and Mast Shiraz showcase the pinnacle of cool climate winemaking.

Our 2022 collection displays characteristic elegance and finesse, with well integrated pepper notes, signature of Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz and Grampians cool climate winemaking.

“I hope you enjoy these wines as much as my team and I did making them. We only put these single-site wines together when the material is there, so we’re proud to have both a Mast and Langi release from vintage 2022, to share.”Adam Louder, Chief Winemaker

These wines are drinking spectacularly now, also boasting cellaring recommendations of 15 to 20+ years, meaning no matter when you choose to open a bottle, you will be generously rewarded. The Langi Shiraz is also paired with a bespoke gift box, offering a premium gifting, cellaring or dining experience.

VINTAGE 2022

A beautiful, almost perfect, growing season at the end of 2021 was followed by a distinct lack of sunshine post veraison in early-2022. Humidity, bird pressure and lack of dry weather and sun made 2022 a tougher than usual vintage. These conditions saw us still picking in early May, creating spice—and plenty of it—in those later picked reds. Bright berry flavours and mixed spices are the hallmarks of Shiraz from this vintage.

While at first glance our lower-than-average yields in 2022 may have limited our possibilities for our Shiraz, we found we had an embarrassment of riches from the Langi Old Block as well as the other premium parcels from our Bayindeen Estate. Assessing our picking options during the growing season, hand picking and whole-bunch ferments were carefully considered, but ultimately discarded. The cool overhead conditions maximised the spice and flavour in the fruit, but did not give the ripeness in the rachis that would have aided whole bunch ferments in a positive way! We focussed on whole berry ferments, carefully destemming the fruit to our open-topped fermenters where our yeasts worked their magic. Extraction was maximised to the point of balance by hand working the ferments 3-4 times a day. A portion of the Old Block Shiraz enjoying an extended maceration on skins prior to draining and pressing to 100% smaller-format French oak (228L barriques) for malolactic fermentation and ageing for 15 months.

Fast forward to blending season in the late winter of 2023, putting together our Langi, Mast and Talus for 2022 was a blending to remember. Assessing each barrel on its own merits, each wine was built through careful barrel selection, but as always, needed to be a sum of the parts with each element balancing, and adding to, the other and not detracting in anyway. Sometimes the blends show themselves quickly but for 2022, we had the sample bottles lined up in our tasting lab day after day to make sure we were maximising the potential of each parcel. Ultimately, 2022 Shiraz has a dark broody spice underpinning our estate-grown fruit – perhaps reminiscent of the overcast conditions of the season? Time will tell.

2022 LANGI SHIRAZ

Full-bodied and rich, with generous notes of sarsaparilla root, wood smoke, rosemary and sage enveloping the blue and black fruit profile. Fine, mouthcoating tannins provide structure to this abundant expression of fruit and spice.

98 POINTS | RAY JORDAN, WINE PILOT

It’s a generous, full-bodied, and opulent wine showing tremendous fruit concentration... a little spice, and even a faint touch of sage bush. The tannins are fine, with a distinctive chalky character, and the combination of black and blue fruits is engaging. Such a beautiful example of what can be achieved with these 50-plus year-old vines from the original planting. Outstanding.

97 POINTS | JENI PORT, HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION

A work of precision, not to mention, beauty. Following on from the stunning '21 vintage comes another top Langi built for ageing but so, so easy to love right now. Delivers a rare elegance, no edges, everything already in place with a show of deep plum and dark fruits, delightfully spicy, gently cedary and earthy, all the while holding an enduring note of black pepper that lasts. Unwavering as fruit, oak and fine tannins work together as one.

2022 MAST SHIRAZ

Lush berry and baking spice abound, framed by savoury notes and supple, silky tannins. The natural acidity, trademark of this particular vineyard, provides tremendous length.

96 POINTS | SHANTEH WALE, WINE PILOT

There is a purple haze of lilac flowers followed by Acai, bilberry and squeezed pomegranates... soft licorice straps and plum skin. A spice box of ground cumin, gingernut and mace are weaved throughout the fruit. It’s hard not to be impressed but yet another outstanding and beautifully balanced wine. Ripe red apples and rambutans continue to give thanks to the grace of natural acidity. In honour of Trevor Mast, this is true mastery in a bottle. A wonderful wine to serve with pink lamb cutlets. This is of outrageous value.

96 POINTS | AARON BRASHER, THE REAL REVIEW

Deep, dark, bright red and youthful in the glass. Exotic and lifted aromas of Asian spice, ground pepper, blueberry, anise, dark cherry, bramble and sarsaparilla. Vibrant, bright and evocatively fragrant and blue fruited in flavour. There’s real purity, poise and precision, with a delicious core of briary fruit, nutty oak, an umami edge and sprightly acidity. There’s lovely length, presence and absolute class here.
