Trevor Mast was a legend of the Australian wine scene. Among his many accomplishments, he is most revered as a pioneer of cool climate Shiraz. The Mast Shiraz is our tribute to his memory, recognising his role in establishing the reputation of Mount Langi Ghiran. Thanks to his foresight, our vineyards showcase the ultimate expression of cool climate Shiraz.

Fruit for this wine is solely hand-picked and sourced exclusively from a single block on our Mount Langi Ghiran Estate Vineyard. This block was planted by Trevor Mast himself some 26 years ago.

While across the board 2020 was a challenging year for the industry, at Mount Langi we had some excellent, albeit small parcels, come off this premium block at the end of the season, showcasing the perfect balance of fruit maturity and flavour. Overcast conditions in the Grampians during ripening resulted in an extended hang time, especially for this east-facing block. While this resulted in smaller make sizes, quality, texture and the earthiness this block produces, were not compromised.

Top Ranked: #3 of 81 2020 Shiraz from Victoria. Named in honour of trailblazing winemaker Trevor Mast, this is an epic homage to the man. Mast first made wine at Mount Langi Ghiran in 1980 and six years later purchased the property and began re-shaping what cool climate shiraz embodied. Sourced from a single block on the estate. Poignantly, the vineyard was planted by Trevor some 26 years earlier. Deep, dark and a fabulously youthful red in the glass. Lifted aromas of blueberry, soy, dried herbs, nutmeg, ferrous earth, graphite, smoked meat and spice. There’s a whole lot going on here. Bright, fresh and lively on the palate. Brambly blue fruits, spice, anise and nutty oak are at the core of the flavours. There’s real crunch and snap from the acid and the tannins are shapely, savoury, textured and firm. A cooler climate shiraz that displays a real purity of fruit, plenty of structure and excellent ageability.

This wine is a tribute to Trevor Mast, who will be remembered very fondly by many in the wine industry, not only as a terrific winemaker but also a good bloke. He was instrumental in changing Australian attitudes towards Shiraz. Sure, the warmer regions made great wines, but cool climate Shiraz was also a thing of beauty and he opened eyes to this. This wine is from a vineyard planted by Trevor 26 years ago. 70% whole bunch, 30% whole berry. Thrice daily pumpovers and then 18 months in French oak, 40% new. This is indeed a worthy tribute. A deep, dark red. This is a most attractive cool climate Shiraz. Notes of dark berries, liqueur cherries, quality oak which is integrating well, black olives, blackcurrants and tobacco leaves. Seamless structure here, with elegance and refinement. Excellent length and always balanced throughout too, with the silkiest of tannins. Lots to love here and it should drink beautifully over the next ten to twelve years.

Whole bunches (30%) and 40% new French oak. This is a substantial wine, warm with alcohol, soft in texture and yet inherently complex. Game, tinned corn, roasted plum and cedar notes come flecked with twiggy spice, saltbush and, at a stretch, black pepper. It will be enjoyed for its warmth and volume but it’s the game and (whole) bunchy spice notes that are the key here.

A tribute wine to the legendary Trevor Mast and his vision for cool climate expressions of Shiraz. Sourced from a single block planted by the man himself. 70% whole berry and 30% whole bunch the wine spent two weeks on skins. It then matured for 18 months in French barriques of which 40% was new oak. A slew of red cherries, strawberry jam and mulberry pie. Sweet cinnamon, mocha and vanilla custard gives way to a sea asparagus and kombu character. Green peppercorns, wild thyme and bay leaf. The wine is full of sweet oak spice but its cool climate fruit shows up in spades on the palate. Crunchy acidity, cured meats and an elegant red plum skin. It’s got a bit of everything and demonstrates why regions like the Grampians fare so well in warmer vintages. Drink now or will cellar for another 3 years. A wine that would do nicely served with lamb and chimichurri sauce.
