Nestled in the foothills of the 400-million-year-old granite massif is Mount Langi Ghiran. Over time, the forces of Mother Nature have cast rock fragments to the base of the mountain creating a formation we know as Talus.
The Talus range is an expression of the unique soils at Mount Langi Ghiran, reflecting our intimate knowledge of vine, soil and mountain. The 2022 Talus Shiraz showcases an elegant tannin structure, with thyme and rosemary peeking through the concentrated berry flavours.

Viticulture

Shiraz (100%)
2022
Grampians, Victoria
A beautiful, almost perfect, growing season was followed by a distinct lack of sunshine post veraison. Humidity, bird pressure and lack of dry weather and sun made 2022 a tougher than usual vintage. Our reds crawled to the finish line in terms of ripeness – seeing us still picking in early May. However, what this created is spice – and plenty of it - in those later picked reds. Bright berry flavours and mixed spices are the hallmarks of Shiraz from this vintage.

A brilliant and bright shiraz shows the elegance and sleek style of this region. Spicy cherry and plummy characters emerge on the nose with just a little black pepper character. The super fine and elegantly structured palate is the highlight. The spicy fruits with their lightly dried herb and bright berry characters are immediately captivating. Fine chalky tannins and oak, of which 40% was new, strike a perfect supporting balance. Terrific wine.

Sourced from blocks planted by Trevor Mast in the 1990s. Maturation in French barriques (40% new) for 15 months. It is a constant that Talus is immediately understated, elegant and yet it builds and builds in the glass. Lifted florals, acacia, sage, black pepper mix with dark berries and woodsy scented oak. The pepper factor, while supple and fresh, runs long and lingering. Ditto fine tannins. Very MLG.

Dark red, inky and opaque in the glass. Lifted and heady aromas of blueberry, white pepper, Asian spice, sarsaparilla, tamari and boysenberry. Fleshy, juicy, plump and full of blue fruits, spice and creamy, nutmeggy oak. The tannins are firm and shapely and the acidity bright and crunchy. There’s lovely purity and poise here.

The 2022 Shiraz Talus is multi-layered, with focused aromas of violets, blackberry essence, white pepper and sage supported by well-balanced French oak. It’s quite textural, with an admirable mix of powerful, hot granite nuances and integrated yet firm drying tannins. It is complete and will build handsomely in bottle.
